RESUMEN

Gastrodia elata Blume (G. elata) is a well-known medicine food homology plant widely used in treating neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, undiscovered gastrodin derivatives were systematically studied. Seven novel gastrodin derivatives (1-7), including a unique gastrodin isocitrate (1) and six differently substituted parishin derivatives (2-7), were isolated. Structural identification was mainly based on 1D and 2D NMR data, high-resolution ESI-MS data, and HPLC analysis. Notably, the stereochemistry of 1 was further elucidated by ECD calculations. Compounds 1 and 6 showed neuroprotective effects on the H2O2-induced PC12 cell injury model. Molecular docking analysis exhibited that 1 and 6 had good affinities with three popular AD-related targets. These findings not only enriched the chemical diversity but also revealed potential active components in G. elata.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that 'live high-base train high-interval train low' (HiHiLo) altitude training, compared to 'live low-train high' (LoHi), yields greater benefits on performance and physiological adaptations. Methods: Sixteen young male middle-distance runners (age, 17.0 ± 1.5 y; body mass, 58.8 ± 4.9 kg; body height, 176.3 ± 4.3 cm; training years, 3-5 y; training distance per week, 30-60 km.wk-1) with a peak oxygen uptake averaging ~65 ml.min-1.kg-1 trained in a normobaric hypoxia chamber (simulated altitude of ~2,500 m, monitored by heart rate ~170 bpm; thrice weekly) for 3 weeks. During this period, the HiHiLo group (n = 8) stayed in normobaric hypoxia (at ~2,800 m; 10 h.day-1), while the LoHi group (n = 8) resided near sea level. Before and immediately after the intervention, peak oxygen uptake and exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses (incremental cycle test) as well as running performance and time-domain heart rate variability (5-km time trial) were assessed. Hematological variables were monitored at baseline and on days 1, 7, 14 and 21 during the intervention. Results: Peak oxygen uptake and running performance did not differ before and after the intervention in either group (all P > 0.05). Exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses, measured both at submaximal (240 W) and maximal loads during the incremental test, and log-transformed root mean square of successive R-R intervals during the 4-min post-run recovery period, did not change (all P > 0.05). Hematocrit, mean reticulocyte absolute count and reticulocyte percentage increased above baseline levels on day 21 of the intervention (all P < 0.001), irrespective of group. Conclusions: Well-trained runners undertaking base training at moderate simulated altitude for 3 weeks, with or without hypoxic residence, showed no performance improvement, also with unchanged time-domain heart rate variability and exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses.

Despite possessing substantial benefits of enhanced safety and cost-effectiveness, the aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) still suffers with the critical challenges induced by inherent instability of Zn metal in aqueous electrolytes. Zn dendrites, surface passivation, and corrosion are some of the key challenges governed by water-driven side reactions in Zn anodes. Herein, a highly reversible Zn anode is demonstrated via interfacial engineering of Zn/electrolyte driven by amino acid D-Phenylalanine (DPA) additions. The preferential adsorption of DPA and the development of compact SEI on the Zn anode suppressed the side reactions, leading to controlled and uniform Zn deposition. As a result, DPA added aqueous electrolyte stabilized Zn anode under severe test environments of 20.0 mA cm-2 and 10.0 mAh cm-2 along with an average plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of 99.37%. Under multiple testing conditions, the DPA-incorporated electrolyte outperforms the control group electrolyte, revealing the critical additive impact on Zn anode stability. This study advances interfacial engineering through versatile electrolyte additive(s) toward development of stable Zn anode, which may lead to its practical implementation in aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI) is identified as a severe vascular emergency, and the treatment strategy of MI/RI still needs further improvement. The present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) on MI/RI and underlying mechanisms. In ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) rats, MTH treatment significantly improved myocardial injury, attenuated myocardial infarction, and inhibited the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. The results of proteomics identified SLC25A10 as the main target of MTH treatment. Consistently, SLC25A10 expressions in I/R rat myocardium and hypoxia and reoxygenation (H/R) cardiomyocytes were significantly suppressed, which was effectively reversed by MTH treatment. In H/R cardiomyocytes, MTH treatment significantly improved cell injury, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inhibited the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, which were partially reversed by SLC25A10 deletion. These findings suggested that MTH treatment could protect against MI/RI by modulating SLC25A10 expression to suppress mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, providing new theoretical basis for clinical application of MTH treatment for MI/RI.

Atmospheric turbulence severely degrades the optical wavefront of a propagating beam, which greatly reduces the coupling efficiency of free-space optical (FSO) receivers. Among the various methods to mitigate the effects, the use of a multi-channel receiver is more convenient and economical. After passing through the multi-channel receiver, multiple single-mode fibers (SMFs) are output and need to be combined. In this paper, we propose photonic integrated coherent beam combiners based on multimode interference (MMI) and the stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm, which avoids detecting the light out of each channel and adding the data signal in the electrical domain. First, we propose a 4-channel coherent beam combiner based on a 4×1 MM, and about 21 iterations of the SPGD algorithm are required to enhance the combined optical power to a maximum of 96%. Furthermore, we demonstrate a combination of 16 beams using five 4×1 MMIs, which requires 140 iterations to enhance the combined power to 89%. This study offers theoretical insights to enhance the integration of FSO communication systems.

The formation of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds via the reaction of small inorganic molecules is of great significance for understanding the fundamental transition from inorganic to organic matter, and thus the origin of life. Yet, the detailed mechanism of the C-H bond formation, particularly the time scale and molecular-level control of the dynamics, remain elusive. Here, we investigate the light-induced bimolecular reaction starting from a van der Waals molecular dimer composed of two small inorganic molecules, H2 and CO. Employing reaction microscopy driven by a tailored two-color light field, we identify the pathways leading to C-H photobonding thereby producing HCO+ ions, and achieve coherent control over the reaction dynamics. Using a femtosecond pump-probe scheme, we capture the ultrafast formation time, i.e., 198 ± 16 femtoseconds. The real-time visualization and coherent control of the dynamics contribute to a deeper understanding of the most fundamental bimolecular reactions responsible for C-H bond formation, thus contributing to elucidate the emergence of organic components in the universe.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the proportion of CD161 on CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells in peripheral blood of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and investigate its clinical relevance of pSS. METHODS: The proportion of CD56+ NK cells and CD161 on CD56+ NK cells was detected by flow cytometry in 31 pSS patients and 29 healthy controls (HCs). The correlations between the proportion of CD161+CD56+ NK cells and clinical features and disease activity of pSS were further analyzed. Meanwhile, we drew the receiver operating characteristic curve to evaluate the diagnostic value of CD161+CD56+ NK cells in pSS. In addition, we evaluated the differences in the effects of CD161+ cells and CD161- cells in peripheral blood on the function of CD56+ NK cells in 5 pSS patients. RESULTS: The proportion of CD56+ NK cells and CD161+CD56+ NK cells decreased markedly in pSS patients compared to HCs. The correlation analysis showed that the proportion of CD161+CD56+ NK cells negatively correlated with white blood cells, Immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgM, IgG, European League Against Rheumatism Sjogren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index and European League Against Rheumatism Sjogren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index, and positively correlated with complement C4. The proportion of CD161+CD56+ NK cells in pSS patients with decayed tooth, fatigue, arthralgia, skin involvement, primary biliary cirrhosis, interstitial lung disease, anti-SSA/Ro60 positive, anti-SSB positive and high IgG was lower than that in negative patients. Furthermore, compared with inactive patients, the proportion of CD161+CD56+ NK cells decreased obviously in active patients. The area under the curve was 0.7375 (p = .0016), the results indicated that CD161+CD56+ NK cells had certain diagnostic values for pSS. In addition, the proportion of CD86, HLA-DR, Ki67, FasL, TNF-α, and IFN-γ on CD161+CD56+ NK cells was lower than that on CD161-CD56+ NK cells in the peripheral blood of pSS patients. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that the proportion of CD56+ NK cells and CD161+CD56+ NK cells decreased significantly in pSS patients, and the proportion of CD161+CD56+ NK cells negatively associated with the clinical features and disease activity of pSS patients. CD161 expression inhibited the function of CD56+ NK cells in peripheral blood of pSS patients. The CD161+CD56+ NK cells may present as a potential target for therapy and a biomarker of disease activity in pSS.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the trends of Parkinson's disease (PD) mortality rates among Chinese residents from 2004 to 2021, provide evidence for the formulation of PD prevention and control strategies to improve the quality of life among PD residents. METHODS: Demographic and sociological data such as gender, urban or rural residency and age were obtained from the National Cause of Death Surveillance Dataset from 2004 to 2021. We then analyzed the trends of PD mortality rates by Joinpoint regression. RESULTS: The PD mortality and standardized mortality rates in China showed an overall increasing trend during 2004-2021 (average annual percentage change [AAPC] = 7.14%, AAPCASMR=3.21%, P < 0.001). The mortality and standardized mortality rate in male (AAPC = 7.65%, AAPCASMR=3.18%, P < 0.001) were higher than that of female (AAPC = 7.03%, AAPCASMR=3.09%, P < 0.001). The PD standardized mortality rates of urban (AAPC = 5.13%, AAPCASMR=1.76%, P < 0.001) and rural (AAPC = 8.40%, AAPCASMR=4.29%, P < 0.001) residents both increased gradually. In the age analysis, the mortality rate increased with age. And the mortality rates of those aged > 85 years was the highest. Considering gender, female aged > 85 years had the fastest mortality trend (annual percentage change [APC] = 5.69%, P < 0.001). Considering urban/rural, rural aged 80-84 years had the fastest mortality trend (APC = 6.68%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The mortality rate of PD among Chinese residents increased from 2004 to 2021. Male sex, urban residence and age > 85 years were risk factors for PD-related death and should be the primary focus for PD prevention.

Tuning the interfacial Schottky barrier with van der Waals (vdW) contacts is an important solution for two-dimensional (2D) electronics. Here we report that the interlayer dipoles of 2D vdW superlattices (vdWSLs) can be used to engineer vdW contacts to 2D semiconductors. A bipolar WSe2 with Ba6Ta11S28 (BTS) vdW contact was employed to exhibit this strategy. Strong interlayer dipoles can be formed due to charge transfer between the Ba3TaS5 and TaS2 layers. Mechanical exfoliation breaks the superlattice and produces two distinguished surfaces with TaS2 and Ba3TaS5 terminations. The surfaces thus have opposite surface dipoles and consequently different work functions. Therefore, all the devices fall into two categories in accordance with the rectifying direction, which were verified by electrical measurements and scanning photocurrent microscopy. The growing vdWSL family along with the addition surface dipoles enables prospective vdW contact designs and have practical application in nanoelectronics and nano optoelectronics.

Green-stem forsythia (Forsythia viridissima), also known as golden bell, is cultivated widely in China as an early spring flowering shrub. In July 2020, yellow or white vein clearing symptoms on leaves were observed in approximate 15% golden bell plants along a landscape river in Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, China. Symptomatic leaves from six different plants were collected and pooled. Total RNA was extracted from about 200 mg pooled sample using TRIzol Reagent (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, USA) and used for high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The cDNA library was constructed using a TruSeq RNA Sample Preparation Kit (Illumina) and an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform was utilized to yield 150 nt paired-end reads. CLC Genomic Workbench 11 (QIAGEN) with default parameters were used for data analysis. A total of 41,604,174 paired-end reads were obtained, and 156,853 contigs (16 - 26,665 nt) were generated de novo and compared with sequences in the NCBI nt and nr database using BLASTn and BLASTx, respectively. A total of 197,277 reads were mapped to the citrus leaf blotch virus (CLBV; genus Citrivirus, family Betaflexiviridae) genome with an average coverage of 3191×. A contig of 8783 nt (excluding the poly(A) tail) was aligned to CLBV isolate Vib (accession No. OP751940) by BLASTn with the highest nt sequence identity of 99.7% and 99% query coverage, suggesting that the samples were infected with CLBV (Myung-Hwi Kim et al. 2023). No other virus was detected by this analysis. Subsequently, leaves of the six plants collected above, three plants with mild chlorotic symptoms and three plants without obvious symptoms were tested separately by RT-PCR and all were positive for CLBV. Sap from multiple symptomatic F. viridissima leaves was mechanically inoculated to Nicotiana benthamiana, N. tabacum and Datura stramonium in sextuplicate, but after two months, none of the inoculated plants had obvious symptoms and all of them tested negative for CLBV using RT-PCR. To determine the genome sequence of CLBV present in F. viridissima, a single sample from one plant was selected for genome validtion. The contig sequence was confirmed by Sanger sequencing of RT-PCR products amplified using CLBV-specific primers, and the 5' terminal sequence of the virus was determined using a commercial SUPERSWITCH RACE cDNA Synthesis Kit (Tiosbio, Beijing, China). The complete genomic sequence of CLBV isolated from F. viridissima was 8787 nts long, excluding the poly(A) tail, has the expected three predicted ORFs and was deposited in the GenBank database (accession no. OR766026). Phylogenetic analysis of different CLBV genome sequences from fruit trees and other hosts in GenBank using MEGA11 showed that the golden bell isolate was most closely related to isolate Vib (OP751940) from Viburnum lentago in South Korea, with which it was almost identical (99.7% complete nt sequence identity and >99% aa sequence identity in each of the three ORFs). Ten viruses have been previously reported from Forsythia spp. (Kaminska, M. 1985; Lee et al. 1997), but this is the first report of CLBV in this host. CLBV mainly infects citrus, kiwifruit and apple causing mosaic, chlorosis or yellow vein clearing symptoms, however, bud union disorder was observed in 'Nagami' kumquat infected by CLBV, which caused serious production losses (Cao et al. 2017; Li et al. 2018; Liu et al. 2019; Galipienso et al. 2001). Therefore, further investigation is needed to assess if F. viridissima can be an intermediate host to transfer CLBV to other crops.

Importance: Certain patients with hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus could benefit from surgical resection, and postoperative adjuvant therapy may lower the incidence of tumor recurrence. Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of sorafenib plus transarterial chemoembolization vs sorafenib alone as postoperative adjuvant therapy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus. Design, Setting, and Participants: This was a phase 3, multicenter, randomized clinical trial conducted in 5 hospitals in China. A total of 158 patients were enrolled and randomized from October 2019 to March 2022, with a median follow-up of 28.4 months. Portal vein tumor thrombus was graded by the Cheng classification. Eligible patients with hepatocellular carcinoma with Cheng grade I to III portal vein tumor thrombus (ie, involving segmental or sectoral branches, right- or left-side branch, or main trunk of portal vein) were included. Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib or sorafenib alone as postoperative adjuvant therapy. Sorafenib treatment was started within 3 days after randomization, with an initial dose of 400 mg orally twice a day. In the transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib group, transarterial chemoembolization was performed 1 day after the first administration of sorafenib. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was recurrence-free survival. Efficacy was assessed in the intention-to-treat population and safety was assessed in patients who received at least 1 dose of study treatment. Results: Of 158 patients included, the median (IQR) age was 54 (43-61) years, and 140 (88.6%) patients were male. The median (IQR) recurrence-free survival was significantly longer in the transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib group (16.8 [12.0-NA] vs 12.6 [7.8-18.1] months; hazard ratio [HR], 0.57; 95% CI, 0.39-0.83; P = .002). The median (IQR) overall survival was also significantly longer with transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib than with sorafenib alone (30.4 [20.6-NA] vs 22.5 [15.4-NA] months; HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.36-0.91; P = .02). The most common grade 3/4 adverse event was hand-foot syndrome (23 of 79 patients in the transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib group [29.1%] vs 24 of 79 patients in the sorafenib alone group [30.4%]). There were no treatment-related deaths in either group. The transarterial chemoembolization with sorafenib group did not show additional toxicity compared with the sorafenib monotherapy group. Conclusion and Relevance: In this study, the combination of sorafenib and transarterial chemoembolization as postoperative adjuvant therapy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus resulted in longer recurrence-free survival and overall survival than sorafenib alone and was well tolerated. Mutations of the human leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) have been associated with both, idiopathic and familial Parkinson's disease (PD). Most of these pathogenic mutations are located in the kinase domain (KD) or GTPase domain of LRRK2. In this study we describe a mechanism in which protein kinase activity can be modulated by reversible oxidation or reduction, involving a unique pair of adjacent cysteines, the "CC" motif. Among all human protein kinases, only LRRK2 contains this "CC" motif (C2024 and C2025) in the Activation Segment (AS) of the kinase domain. In an approach combining site-directed mutagenesis, biochemical analyses, cell-based assays, and Gaussian accelerated Molecular Dynamics (GaMD) simulations we could attribute a role for each of those cysteines. We employed reducing and oxidizing agents with potential clinical relevance to investigate effects on kinase activity and microtubule docking. We find that each cysteine gives a distinct contribution: the first cysteine, C2024, is essential for LRRK2 protein kinase activity, while the adjacent cysteine, C2025, contributes significantly to redox sensitivity. Implementing thiolates (R-S-) in GaMD simulations allowed us to analyse how each of the cysteines in the "CC" motif interacts with its surrounding residues depending on its oxidation state. From our studies we conclude that oxidizing agents can downregulate kinase activity of hyperactive LRRK2 PD mutations and may provide promising tools for therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND: Although carotid body tumors (CBTs) are rare, they attract particular attention because of their propensity for malignant transformation and the high surgical risk. Because data are scarce and as it is difficult to achieve a large sample size, no study has yet comprehensively analyzed the characteristics, management, or operative complications of CBTs. Therefore, we collected and analyzed all currently available information on CBTs and used the pooled data to derive quantitative information on disease characteristics and management. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science up to 1 December 2022 for studies that investigated the characteristics and management of CBTs. The primary objective was to identify the prevalence of the various characteristics and the incidence of complications. The secondary objective was to compare patients who underwent preoperative embolization (PE) and those who did not (non-PE), as well as to compare patients with different Shamblin grades and those with and without succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) mutations in terms of CBT characteristics and complications. Two reviewers selected studies for inclusion and independently extracted data. All statistical analyses were performed using the standard statistical procedures of Review Manager 5.2 and Stata 12.0. RESULTS: A total of 155 studies with 9,291 patients and 9,862 tumors were identified. The pooled results indicated that the median age of CBT patients was 45.72 years and 65% were female. The proportion of patients with bilateral lesions was 13%. In addition, 16% of patients had relevant family histories, and the proportion of those with SDH gene mutations was 36%. 16% patients experienced multiple paragangliomas and 12% CBTs had catecholamine function. The incidence of cranial nerve injury (CNI) was 27%, and 14% of patients suffered from permanent CNI. The incidence rates of operative mortality and stroke were both 1%, and 4% of patients developed transient ischemic attacks. Of all CBTs, 6% were malignant or associated with metastases or recurrences. The most common metastatic locations were the lymph nodes (3%) and bone (3%), followed by the lungs (2%). Compared to non-PE, PE reduced the estimated blood loss (EBL) (standardized mean difference [SMD] -0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.70, -0.20) and the operation time (SMD -0.56; 95% CI -1.03, -0.09), but it increased the incidence of stroke (odds ratio 2.44; 95% CI 1.04‒ 5.73). Higher Shamblin grade tumors were associated with more operative complications. SDH gene mutation-positive patients were more likely to have a relevant family history and had more symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: CBT was most common in middle-aged females, and early surgical resection was feasible; there was a low incidence of serious operative complications. Routine PE is not recommended because this may increase the incidence of stroke, although PE somewhat reduced the EBL and operation time. Higher Shamblin grade tumors increased the incidence of operative complications. SDH gene mutation-positive patients had the most relevant family histories and symptoms.

Background: Atherosclerotic coronary heart disease (CHD) stands as a paramount cardiovascular concern and the primary cause of mortality. To underscore the significance of our study, it is crucial to highlight the existing gaps in current diagnostic methods and prognostic assessments of CHD. By addressing these gaps, our research aims to contribute valuable insights and advancements in the understanding and management of this prevalent cardiovascular condition. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between carotid ultrasound, the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), and the severity of CHD. Methods: We enrolled 59 patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease and categorized them into two groups (multi-vessel and single-vessel disease groups) based on disease severity. The study employed carotid ultrasound, which measures Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) and carotid artery stenosis, among other indicators. Additionally, we calculated the AIP. This approach allowed us to thoroughly analyze the correlation between these key indicators and the severity of coronary heart disease lesions. Results: The study included 59 patients, 38 with single-vessel disease and 21 with multi-vessel disease. In the multivessel disease group, we observed significantly elevated levels of AIP, IMT, and carotid stenosis compared to the single-vessel disease group. Specifically, AIP, IMT, and carotid stenosis levels were higher in the multi-vessel group. Furthermore, our analysis revealed a positive correlation between AIP and IMT (r = 0.038, P = .003), while no significant correlation was found between AIP and carotid stenosis. Additionally, there was a moderate correlation between IMT and carotid stenosis. Conclusion: The combined assessment of AIP and carotid ultrasonography emerges as a promising approach for evaluating the severity of CHD. Notably, the multi-vessel disease group exhibited higher AIP levels compared to the single-vessel disease group, along with increased IMT and carotid artery stenosis. Our findings highlight a positive correlation between AIP and IMT, as well as between IMT and the degree of carotid stenosis. These associations underscore the potential of AIP, in conjunction with carotid ultrasonography parameters, as valuable indicators for gauging CHD severity. The clinical implications of these findings warrant further exploration, particularly in their potential integration into existing diagnostic or prognostic models for CHD. This integrated approach may offer enhanced precision in distinguishing between single-vessel and multi-vessel disease, contributing to more informed clinical decision-making.

This study examined the effects of three Bacillus strains and one Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain on nitrogen transformation and microbial communities in pig and chicken manure compost. The findings revealed that the use of compound microbial inoculants increased the compost temperature, accelerated moisture reduction, enhanced cellulase activity, and stimulated the accumulation of NH4 +-N, NO3 --N, and total nitrogen (TN), resulting in a 9% increase in TN content. The abundance of Firmicutes decreased by 3.95% at the maturation phase, while Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes increased by 1.64% and 1.85%, respectively. Inoculation led to an increase in amoA, nxrA and nifH gene copy numbers, while simultaneously reducing the abundance of nirK, nosZ and nirS genes. It also resulted in an increase in functional enzyme levels, specifically nif and amo, with a corresponding decrease in nor. Clostridium, Phascolarctobacterium, Eubacterium and Faecalibacterium from the class Clostridium, which have a significant correlation with nifH and nxrA genes, suggest their likely crucial role in nitrogen retention and fixation. Inoculation aided in the removal of pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) like fluoroquinolones, nucleosides and nitroimidazole. This study provides effective theoretical support for the mechanism of nitrogen retention and fixation, and for improving the quality of compost.

In virtual reality applications, in addition to visual feedback, real objects can be used as props for virtual objects to provide passive haptic feedback, which greatly enhances user immersion. Usually, real object props are not one-to-one correspondence with virtual objects. Haptic retargeting technique is proposed to establish the virtual-real correspondence by introducing an offset between the virtual hand and the real hand. Sometimes, the offset is too large to cause user discomfort, and it is necessary to introduce a reset between two haptic retargeting operations to force the virtual hand and the real hand to coincide in order to eliminate the offset. However, too many resets can interfere with this immersion. To address this problem, we propose a haptic retargeting method based on proxy importance calculation using multiple props in virtual reality. The concept of proxy importance for props is introduced first, and then a proxy importance based prop selection and placement method for moving virtual objects are proposed. We also improve the performance of our method by using the props' weighted proxy importance strategy for multi-user collaboration. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, our method significantly reduces the number of resets, the task completion time, hand movement distances, and task load without the cost of cybersickness in the single-user task. In the multi-user collaborative task, our method also achieves significant improvement using the strategy that weights the proxy importance of the props.

Double-walled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), synthesized using Zn and Co, are potential porous materials for trace benzene adsorption. Aluminum is with low-toxicity and abundance in nature, in comparison with Zn and Co. Therefore, a double-walled Al-based MOF, named as ZJU-520(Al), with large microporous specific surface area of 2235 m2 g-1, pore size distribution in the range of 9.26-12.99 Å and excellent chemical stability, was synthesized. ZJU-520(Al) is consisted by helical chain of AlO6 clusters and 4,6-Di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine ligands. Trace benzene adsorption of ZJU-520(Al) is up to 5.98 mmol g-1 at 298 K and P/P0 = 0.01. Adsorbed benzene molecules are trapped on two types of sites. One (site I) is near the AlO6 clusters, another (site II) is near the N atom of ligands, using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. ZJU-520(Al) can effectively separate trace benzene from mixed vapor flow of benzene and cyclohexane, due to the adsorption affinity of benzene higher than that of cyclohexane. Therefore, ZJU-520(Al) is a potential adsorbent for trace benzene adsorption and benzene/cyclohexane separation.

Background: Frostbite is a chemia resulting from cold-induced skin damage. The process of frostbite is often accompanied by inflammation, and the therapeutic strategies focusing on anti-inflammation are the main direction to data. Tat-CIRP is a 15 amino acid peptide containing HIV protein and cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP), which is believed to compete with endogenous CIRP for myeloid differentiation 2 (MD2) binding. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of Tat-CIRP in the treatment of frostbite. Methods: A mouse model of frostbite was established, and on the first day after frostbite occurrence, Tat-CIRP peptide was administered intravenously via the tail with a dosage interval of one day for a total of three doses. Frozen mouse skin sections were subjected to histological analysis, including hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, Masson staining, and immunohistochemical examination. Western blotting was performed to detect the expression level of Ki-67 in mouse skin tissue. Results: One day after frostbite, mice exhibited skin swelling and a solid appearance. From day 1 to 5 after frostbite, MD2 expression was significantly upregulated, while CIRP expression was downregulated. Compared to the frostbite group, mice treated with Tat-CIRP showed accelerated frostbite recovery, reduced levels of inflammatory factors and MD2. Furthermore, the expression of cell proliferation-associated protein Ki-67 and angiogenesis-related protein CD31 was upregulated. Conclusion: Tat-CIRP promotes frozen wound healing via inhibiting inflammation and promoting angiogenesis in frostbitten mice.

RNA viruses and viroids exist and evolve as quasispecies due to error-prone replication. Quasispecies consist of a few dominant master sequences alongside numerous variants that contribute to genetic diversity. Upon environmental changes, certain variants within quasispecies have the potential to become the dominant sequences, leading to the emergence of novel infectious strains. However, the emergence of new infectious variants remains unpredictable. Using mutant pools prepared by saturation mutagenesis of selected stem and loop regions, our study of potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) demonstrates that mutants forming local three-dimensional (3D) structures similar to the wild type (WT) are more likely to accumulate in PSTVd quasispecies. The selection mechanisms underlying this biased accumulation are likely associated with cell-to-cell movement and long-distance trafficking. Moreover, certain trafficking-defective PSTVd mutants can be spread by functional sister genomes in the quasispecies. Our study reveals that the RNA 3D structure of stems and loops constrains the evolution of viroid quasispecies. Mutants with a structure similar to WT have a higher likelihood of being maintained within the quasispecies and can potentially give rise to novel infectious variants. These findings emphasize the potential of targeting RNA 3D structure as a more robust approach to defend against viroid infections.
